How to get more players on your FiveM server: 12 tips that actually work

Grow your FiveM server the honest way: 12 practical tips on the server list, onboarding, staff, events, Discord, streamers, votes and stats, plus why buying fake votes or players backfires.

A busy server doesn't happen by accident. It's the result of lots of small decisions: how your server looks in the list, what new players experience in their first ten minutes, and whether they still want to log in a week later. There are no shortcuts, but there are levers a lot of server owners overlook.

Here are 12 tips you can put into practice without a big budget.

First impressions: the server list and getting started

1. Get your name, description and tags right

In the FiveM server list, people decide in seconds whether to click. Check your server.cfg:

sv_projectName "Northside RP"
sv_projectDesc "Serious RP | Custom jobs | English | Active staff"
sets tags "roleplay, serious, english, qbcore"
sets locale "en-US"
  • Keep the name short and readable. No wall of emojis, no ALL CAPS.
  • Make the description specific. What actually sets your server apart? "Best server ever" tells people nothing.
  • Use accurate tags and language. Misleading tags bring in players who leave right away.
  • Banner and icon. A clean server icon and a decent banner look a lot more professional. Check the FiveM docs for the convars that currently control them.

2. Onboarding: the first ten minutes

Plenty of players leave before they've experienced anything at all. The usual culprits: endless loading, a confusing character creator, and no idea where to go next.

  • Keep the download lean. Every unnecessary map and ultra-high-res car costs you patience.
  • Give new players a clear starting point: a spawn, a short intro, a first job.
  • A "new players" channel or an in-game point of contact removes a lot of uncertainty.
Play through your own server with a fresh account every so often. You'll find things that surprise you.

3. Whitelist, sure, but without pointless hurdles

A whitelist can seriously raise the quality of RP. It can also turn into a wall. If the application asks for three pages of backstory and the answer takes five days, your applicants are long gone.

  • Only ask for what you actually need.
  • Review applications quickly and give clear feedback, even when it's a no.
  • Consider whether a short voice interview works better than a long form.

Whitelisted or open, both are valid. What matters is that the choice fits the players you want.

Staff, rules and content

4. Staff people can actually reach

Players stick around where they feel treated fairly. Support that responds quickly, stays friendly and explains its decisions is worth more than any new script.

  • Decide who's available and when.
  • Make sure your staff interpret the rules the same way.
  • Recruit deliberately instead of taking anyone who asks.

5. Short, clear rules

Nobody reads a rulebook with 80 sections. Keep the key rules brief, add examples, and keep them up to date. Explain terms like RDM, VDM or powergaming for newcomers instead of assuming everyone knows them.

6. Regular events and fresh content

A server where nothing happens for weeks quietly bleeds players. You don't need huge updates; consistency matters more:

  • recurring event nights (races, a city festival, a big faction storyline),
  • small, announced updates with a changelog,
  • picking up community ideas and visibly acting on them.

Community and reach

7. Make Discord your community's home base

Your Discord is often the first place people form an opinion. Keep it tidy: a handful of clearly named channels, a landing channel with rules and connect info, and fast replies in support. A dead Discord with 40 channels looks worse than a small, active one.

8. Streamers and content creators

One streamer who genuinely enjoys your server often brings in more players than any ad. Just keep it honest:

  • Reach out to smaller creators whose style fits your kind of RP.
  • Don't give them special perks in-game. Your community will notice and resent it.
  • Make it easy to share clips and streams, for example with a dedicated Discord channel.

9. Toplists and votes with in-game rewards

Toplists help players discover new servers. Votes work best when they give your community something small in return, like an in-game reward that doesn't break your balance.

On GS2THETOP, only votes from the current month count, each player can vote once every 24 hours, and rankings can't be bought. The details are in How ranking works.

Two things are especially worth doing:

  • The free gs2thetop script hands out vote rewards in-game automatically, verifies that you own the server, and reports live player counts.
  • A complete profile with a solid description, accurate tags and links. You can list your server here in about 30 seconds using your cfx.re join link.

Measure, retain, keep going

10. Measure what actually works

Gut feeling is unreliable. Check a few simple numbers regularly:

MetricWhat it tells you
Players at different times of dayWhen events and staff shifts pay off
New players per weekWhether people can find you
How many are still around after a weekWhether your onboarding works
Where new players come fromDiscord, streamers, toplists, friends?

Just ask new players how they found you, in Discord or during whitelisting. Then change one thing at a time and watch what happens.

11. Retention beats raw growth

A hundred new players who are 95 percent gone after a day don't help much. Ten people who stay will bring friends and carry the RP. So start by figuring out why players leave: frustration with staff, boredom, performance issues, nobody to talk to. Short feedback surveys help a lot here.

12. Consistency and uptime

Nothing drives players away faster than a server that's often down, constantly stutters, or does a "full wipe and relaunch" every few weeks. Schedule restarts at fixed times, announce maintenance, keep backups, and test updates before they go live. How much performance you need depends heavily on your scripts, map mods and player count, so monitor your resource usage instead of guessing.

What to avoid

You'll run into offers for bought votes, bot players or artificially inflated player counts. Stay away from all of them:

  • It gets noticed. Sudden vote spikes or player counts that don't match what's actually happening get spotted, by toplists and by players.
  • It can break the rules. Manipulation can have consequences for your listing. Also check the current terms on the Cfx.re Portal.
  • It destroys trust. Someone who joins a "full" server and finds nobody there won't come back, and they'll tell their friends.
20 real players are worth more than 200 fake ones.

Wrapping up

You won't get more players overnight. Focus on a strong first impression, an easy start, fair staff and regular content. Build your community on Discord, work with creators who fit your server, and use votes in a way your players actually benefit from. And measure what works.
